Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Captives in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military authority to facilitate the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Agreements and Hostage Bodies Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on October 10, the group is obligated to hand over the bodies of all captives promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date handed back the remains of 15 of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Role as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the party looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the procedures of the operation and delegated the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She further clarified: “The ICRC was did not participate in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it engage in the retrieval of human remains.”

American Ultimatum and Local Recovery Operations

Recently, the US president delivered a 48-hour demand to the organization. “They is going to have to start returning the remains of the hostages who died, which include American citizens, promptly, or the additional nations involved in this great peace will intervene,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, Hamas, accompanied by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were granted permission by Israel to search for bodies beyond the line indicating the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use excavator machines and vehicles in the search.

Official Verification and Media Reports

This development was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been permitted to enter sections of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the remains of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC personnel.

“For this purpose, Hamas members were permitted to cross the designated boundary,” the source was cited as saying.

Footage published by a regional network appeared to show members of a Hamas unit – belonging to the group’s military wing responsible for guarding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Challenges in Locating Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive issues in the truce reached between the parties. Yet, the attempt to locate the remains has proved challenging from the outset, given the existence of an estimated enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, buried under the rubble.

Conflicting Statements on Body Whereabouts

Hamas has claimed it lacks information on the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with several of its units that had been holding the captives and were allegedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas was aware of the locations of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Disarmament Discussions

While the American leader has acknowledged that some of the remains are hard to reach, he said that “others they can return immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”

“This could be related to the surrender of weapons of the group,” he added.

Washington has said it has received guarantees from Hamas that the group will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. The militant organisation remains reluctant to surrender its arms without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
