Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought justice and the legal system won.

Sixty days following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks headed to prison.

Imminent Imprisonment

The convicted instigator – who has been living under house arrest in his residence while a number of judicial steps and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, amid increasing speculation that he will be transferred to a infamous top-security penitentiary.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative ex- paratrooper displayed scant compassion for the country's inmates.

“Why should we offer those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, period. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to wind up behind bars, you simply need is not rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Facility Discussion

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, several of whom this week toured the complex in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute gut ailments – the result of a almost deadly knife attack during the 2018 presidential political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He won’t be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding forty inmates: “That’s almost one meter squared per inmate.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible food,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Authoring in a major publication, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its record”.

“This is an wrong that gnaws the souls of countless people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Mixed Public Response

That may be true considering the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted incarceration has also gladdened the feelings of numerous individuals who feel he should be imprisoned for planning to prevent his successor from taking power – and even scheming to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the current administration's political party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain proper care – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time celebrating the harsh treatment of convicts, had abruptly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the far-right – which has consistently argued that civil liberties should not be for offenders – decided to visit a penitentiary to learn what situations are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, insulting conduct”.

Possible Prison Facilities

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected assigned facility seems to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning official residence, around 20 kilometers away.

According to information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot terrace. “He could be permitted to have a television and even a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” sources indicated.

Ideological Comments

Senator Lucas criticized the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his future in the {
