Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to recreate the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

The former coach suggested his intention to channel his attention toward working with the youth and combating what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook now prevalent in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond Football

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Mentorship

Leading up to the launch of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he stated that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for teenagers, utilizing lessons from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He believes that his experience coaching England, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Drawing on his family life, the coach commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

Southgate stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights conflict.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to provide additional perspectives on guidance and public spirit inspired by his distinguished time in football.
