Fury Explodes as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Rebuke
Personalities from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to defend the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
