EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
