British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
