Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was persistently working to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
